Baby Ray are the critical favorites of the smarter rockers in Boston and would be in very good shape if they were stranded in a ski lodge together and needed material to build a fire. They've got a stack of great press thick enough to choke Wilco. This, their fourth album, should add nicely to the pile, but I can barely think of a thing to say about it for the life of me. To my ears, it's the same perfect blend of XTC and Guided By Voices that I've depended on them for over the last 6 years or so. This one might be a shade less genius than previous efforts -- more on the level of Adrien Belew's band the Bears, I suppose- but all Baby Ray is good Baby Ray.
