The "pop" in pop music is usually understood as shorthand for"popular", but Baby Ray's pop is more like the onomatopoetic definition of the word -- as in pop, zing, whee! The Boston's bands tunes bubble with an energy closely associated with post-punk and new wave. The guitars crisscross in a bristling distortion free tangle, recalling the smart and tart "pop" of XTC at that band's most kenetic and clever. Erich Groats voice cuts into twisted melodies over often unusual Chord changes, and the oddball lyrics keep your ears perked at all times. Monkeypuzzle may not be remembered as what defined rock in 1998, but don't be surprised if Baby Ray's churning wit and solid writing win over future "pop" bands and fans.
